Because of the hawkish sentiment surrounding the BoJ's policy outlook, the GBP/JPY stays below 193.50.

As traders anticipate more rate hikes from the BoJ in the future, the GBP/JPY declines.
If the outlook from the January meeting turns out as anticipated, the BoJ reaffirmed its intention to raise interest rates further.
The risk of stagflation in the UK economy presents difficulties for the pound sterling.

The GBP/JPY trades at about 193.30 on Wednesday during European hours, giving up its recent gains from the previous session. Amid growing expectations that the Bank of Japan (BoJ) will keep raising interest rates, the Japanese yen (JPY) appreciated versus its peers. Members stressed the need for cautious monetary policy adjustments, according to minutes of the December Bank of Japan meeting that were made public this Wednesday.

Investors, meanwhile, have greater faith that the BoJ will carry on with its normalization process and raise interest rates further in 2025. The BoJ reiterated last week that, should the outlook at the January meeting materialize as anticipated, it will continue to raise interest rates and modify its monetary policy stance.

Because of the growing risk of stagflation in the UK economy, which is fueled by persistent inflation and waning labor demand, the GBP/JPY cross appears to be vulnerable to further downside risks.

In light of the weak economic outlook, traders are currently pricing in a 25 basis point (bps) rate cut in the Bank of England's (BoE) first monetary policy decision of 2025 on February 6. This would lower borrowing rates to 4.5%.

In an interview with Bloomberg on Tuesday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed optimism about the economy. "Growth" is the Labour government's top priority, Starmer underlined, adding that the economy is starting to "turn around." "We have a huge amount of trade with the United States already, and the base is there for even better trading relations," he said, highlighting the close economic ties between the US and the UK. We must expand on that.
